Thread: 1/6 I want to give a shout out to @GovHerbert. I've grown to respect him over the years. We've certainly had big political skirmishes (remember Herbert v. Kitchen?), and I may have been arrested protesting outside of his office with a few friends. But here's the deal...
2/6: No matter how tense and difficult our disagreements were, he always kept the door open for dialogue with @EqualityUtah and the LGBTQ community. He listened. And overtime we found consensus without compromising either of our values or beliefs. In fact...
3/6: Herbert may go down in history as the Utah Gov to sign the most pro-LGBTQ bills in our state's history! He supported our nondiscrimination effort in 2015, the repeal of our No Promo Homo law in 2017 and the passage of LGBTQ inclusive hate crimes legislation in 2019. AND...
4/6: Gov Herbert was absolutely pivotal in helping us ban conversion therapy for minors this year. We could not have done it without him. He heard the story of survivors and was moved. His actions sent a powerful message of belonging to LGBTQ youth. And the country noticed.
5/6: Add the Utah Compact on Racial Equity to his list of accomplishments. It's a phenomenal document that you don't see happening in other red states. He's not afraid to acknowledge "systemic racism" and declare "nothing about us, without us". https://slchamber.com/utahcompact/
6/6: There are probably a million things we disagree on. Who cares? Americans don't have to agree 100% ideologically to work together. But we do need to keep our hearts open to each other. Thank you @GovHerbert for serving our state & thoughtfully engaging our communities.
