Trump lost the election because he lost five states he won in 2016.

Here’s the thing: since Trump was elected in 2016, his party has lost Senate, House and/or Gubernatorial races in every one of these five states.

Since 2016, the GOP has not flipped a single of these from Dems.
Trump won Arizona by a relatively small margin (3.50%) in 2016.

In 2018, the GOP lost one AZ Senate seat and a House seat.

In 2020, the GOP lost the Presidential race and the OTHER Senate seat.
Trump won Georgia by a fairly small margin, for a Republican (5.09%), in 2016.

In 2018, the GOP lost one GA House seat.

In 2020, the GOP lost the Presidential race and ANOTHER GA House seat.
Trump won Michigan by the barest of margins, 10,704 votes (0.23%) in 2016.

In 2018, the GOP lost the MI Governorship and two MI House seats.

In 2020, the GOP lost the Presidential race in MI. As it had in every election since 1988 EXCEPT FOR 2016.
Trump won Pennsylvania by less than three quarters of a point in 2016.

In 2018, the GOP lost a net 3 PA House seats to the Dems.

In 2020, the GOP lost the Presidential race in PA. As it had in every election since 1988 EXCEPT FOR 2016.
Trump won Wisconsin by 0.77 points in 2016.

The GOP lost the WI Governorship in 2018.

In 2020, the GOP lost the Presidential race in WI. As it had in every election since 1984 EXCEPT FOR 2016.
Since Trump was elected in 2016, the GOP has not picked up net Senate, House or Gubernatorial seats from Democrats in any of the five states that Trump won in 2016 but then lost in 2020.

(The GOP won back Justin Amash’s seat in MI. Amash is a Libertarian, not a Democrat)
While Trump lost five states in 2020 that he had won in 2016, he did not compensate for it by winning any states which he lost in 2016.

The closest Trump came to flipping a 2016 blue state was Nevada, which Trump lost by 2.4 points.
Trump and his lawyers have spent a lot of time alleging voter fraud in Philadelphia and Detroit.

The irony of this accusation is that Trump improved his margins in both cities compared to 2016. https://twitter.com/thevaluesvoter/status/1331089627449610240
Trump did get 10.96 million more votes in 2020 than he got in 2016.

But Biden got 14.37 million more votes in 2020 than Clinton got in 2016.

And Clinton got 3.40 million votes in 2016 than Trump did that year.

Biden has 6.27 million more votes this year than Trump does.

So ..
According to the NY Times exit polls,
in 2016, Trump won whites without a college degree by 39 points.

In 2020, Trump won whites without a college degree by 35 points. Still very solid but still a four point shift toward Biden.
In 2016, Trump won whites with a college degree by four points.

In 2020, Trump lost whites with a college degree by three points - a seven point shift toward Biden.
In 2016, Trump won voters 65 and older by eight points.

In 2020, Trump won voters 65 and older by five points - a three point shift toward Biden.
Trump did worse in most states than he did in 2016 in terms of MARGIN (difference between how many people voted for him versus his opponent).

More people voted for him than before. But even more people voted against him.

To sum it up, since 2017, the GOP has lost the following to the Democrats in the five states that cost Trump the election:

Arizona
- Two US Senate seats
- One US House seat
- 2020 Presidential election

Georgia
- Two US House seats
- 2020 Presidential election
Michigan
- 2 US House seats
- Michigan Governorship
- 2020 Presidential election

Pennsylvania
- 3 US House seats
- 2020 Presidential election

Wisconsin
- Wisconsin Governorship
- 2020 Presidential election
In contrast, in terms of US Senate seats, US House seats, Governorships and Presidential elections, Democrats have had the following net losses in these contests to Republicans since 2017:

Arizona: None
Georgia: None
Michigan: None
Pennsylvania: None
Wisconsin: None
In the states that decided the 2020 election, which Trump lost, ALL the momentum in Congressional, Gubernatorial and Presidential races, since 2017, have gone entirely in one direction.

And that’s AWAY from Trump and his party.

And that alone cost him a second term.
