Under the current district return model it sure seems like they have no real intention of getting most TK-1 students back this school year. (It also doesn't seem to take in physical characteristics of sites in any meaningful way.)
I think that the happy talk around DL has obscured that it is, actually, super not okay to teach young children this way and that if we aren't going back to school we need to do something else (outdoor school, project-based learning, etc.)
We also need the district to prioritize getting early education materials - modeling clay, paint, etc. - into children's hands. We also need to talk about the key learning experiences children are not getting.
None of this is to say we should go back to unsafe conditions during a spike. But we do need to note that the district has blown through all its projections on how long prepping sites would take and has yet to explain why this happened/why they aren't asking sites to prep now.
We should be getting ready to return when conditions allow, not waiting until conditions allow to get started (which is absolutely what is happening in way too many areas).
Instead, the district is asking teachers to do an impossible job, using tools and media that evidence suggests are damaging to learners, without end and without information. They're harming their frontline workers here, and it is not okay or justified.
