The place where I work recently brought on a young man to do the bitch work around the shop.
The lad had already gotten fired after 3 days as a garage door installer, so I was a bit perplexed as to why they brought them on in the shop.
But, thought I, I'll give him a chance.

Turns out the first day as a garage door installer he called human resources to complain about his manager being rude to him.

He busted his ass cleaning shit, and the first few days went pretty smooth for him.
Then came a semi full of garage doors, and a bunch of hard work.

Within about an hour he was asking how long it was going to take, if it was usually this hard and was complaining about how wiki was and how tiring the work was.
I yelled at him a little bit to focus on the work and shut up.
He told me that he thought I was very rude.
Hahaha.

The next day he called in sick because he "are too many bad cherries" the night before.
Okay, first of all, what the fuck are you talking about man?
That's certain to be the dumbest, most weak-bitch excuse ever.
Also, if they were "bad" then why'd you eat more than one?

When he came back in, I did two things:
1) I gave him the nickname Bad-Cherries
2) I decided to try and understand the lad instead of writing him off in disgust.
So I had a trademark Chance Lunceford conversation with him and dived into his history and psychology.

Turns out the dude's dad ain't a great role model, and he'd been raised by a overburden mother, and it never had a strong role model.
He also got married about 6 months ago at the tender age of 21, and he's trying to learn how to be the kind of man it takes to stay married.

I decided to take the lad under my wing to see if he would listen and learn and grow.
I found out he stopped wearing pants and junior high because people made fun of his pale skinny legs, and he's never worn shorts in public since.
It's 90 plus degrees in the shop.

He came to work in basketball shorts the next day, and had metal filings from the window cutter melt through his shorts and burn his dick.
Hahahaha!
But he didn't know in any other shorts, so the next day I brought him in 3 pairs that no longer fit around my thighs.
Squats!

I've been working with him closely over the past two weeks teaching him essentially how to take my job. I'm moving on to a new career soon, and I'd love to have a good replacement when I do.
I've been a lot more patient with the young man than I would be with most young men.

He's been learning well, he's plenty smart, and I'm acting as a masculine role model for him.
For example, he started winking and making kissy faces at the other men we work with.
I pulled him aside and explained to him that this is not going to end well if he continues.

There are numerous other examples where his social skills among men are out of whack, and I've been giving him short lectures about how he might want to adjust his behavior if he wants to get along well in the world of men.
He's been working hard and learning.

He's still not my best friend or anything, but he's a good worker and I think he's going to be a good resource at the shop.
I think also that these lessons in manliness will serve him well in his marriage, and his future career and as a family man if he decides to be one.

This is the situation where normally I would have ostracized him, kept myself apart and let him burn himself out.
This time I did something different.
I stepped into the roll of leadership, and I'm guiding a young man onto a more productive and powerful path.

It's no great deal in the history of man or anything, but I'm grateful to have matured and grown enough to be able to offer a bit of guidance and service to a person who clearly needs it.
And so I challenge each of you to look for opportunities in your own life to do the same.

To save another person from a path of weakness and foolishness, or at least to shift him a degree or two away, can make all the difference in their world.
And sometimes, often in the unlikeliest of places, a person can shift the world a degree or two.

Sometimes, a little nudge in a different direction makes all the difference in the world.
Give the world a nudge and watch what happens.
